Solid Mechanics Testing on Marine Gears
As part of my Mechanics of Solids (MIE222) course, I conducted Finite Element Analysis, Mechanical Testing, Photoelasticity Testing, Strain Gauges and Comparative Analysis for large marine gears to address the issues of subsurface cracking, pitting of the tooth surface, fatigue failure at the root of the tooth, and gear noise and vibration. The FEA was conducted using Ansys.
